Contraindication of Water Therapy:
In the page, water therapy as an answer to the question: How
to Become Anorexic, we mentioned that water therapy is very good in reducing
the urge to eat. We mentioned also that we should consult our doctor before
drinking increased amount of water!
Should we consult a doctor before starting water therapy
?... Yes.
Why ?
Of course, for the healthy persons, there is no contraindication. Anybody
can drink water. This is the general rule
Only for few pathological states, water intake should be limited. For
example :
1- An absolute contraindication to water therapy is Anurea or complete
absence of urine. This is seen in some cases of severe renal
failure where haemodialysis is usually needed. Water intake in such
cases may lead to volume overload and severe acute pulmonary oedema.
2- Some cases of congestive heart failure :
Water therapy restriction in congestive heart failure is a mater of
controversy. Although some doctors ask their patients to decrease their
water intake for fear of leading to volume overload and pulmonary oedema,
the other doctors see that the thing which should be restricted is the salt
and not water therapy.
Salt will lead to water retention in the body.
The problem is that salt restriction is very difficult. It is present in
many foods apart from our desire to take salt to give taste to the food.
Some people feel nausea and even vomiting if they eat food without salt.
Some doctors insist that water therapy can treat congestive heart failure.
Water is a potent diuretic. It stimulates the hormonal factors to induce diuresis.
Water therapy leads to loss of salt with urine. The problem is that water
does increase the blood volume making some overload on the heart. But this
occurs only at the beginning. So water therapy may be only of danger if the
case is very sever or critical where the doctors do their best to remove
every ml of fluid from the circulation to put the heart at rest.
So we advice the patients with congestive heart failure to be close to their
doctors before making any aggressive decision.
