Very low calorie diets are forms of weight loss diets which are "extreme in nature". They are known as modified fasts. They are usually in liquid forms.

These weight loss diets can provide only 300 - 800 kcal per day.

The very low calorie diets are balanced and nutritionally complete diets.

Because of the very nature of the VLCDs, they should be used for short times ( 4 weeks ) and under supervision. They are used only for the severe cases ( BMI > 30 ) where 6 Ib of weight loss per week required.

They are most successful when used in conjunction with some other types of treatment.

There are many researches performed to know the different effects of the very low calorie diets with promising results.

Capstick et al ( 1997) showed that they produced weight loss in obese individuals with diabetes type 2. They improved the diabetes and made its control easier.
